Workshop Series A. Sustainable Transportation and Community Impacts

Workshop 1. Opportunities and Challenges for the Future of the Inland Empire

In this workshop, we will discuss what's happening in the region and the challenges we will be facing with climate change and population growth in the Inland Empire. We will learn why we need to move toward zero emission transportation, and the challenges with electrifying the logistics sector. Next, we will tour the CE-CERT campus including the air quality chambers, the dynamometers, advanced vehicle laboratory, and the transportation labs. Business experts will present an introductory lesson into what is entrepreneurship and how to look at problems with an entrepreneurial mindset. The entire group will conclude with a brainstorming session, give feedback about how they see these problems impacting the community, and pick one idea to pitch as a start-up business plan in front of investors!

Workshop 2. Discovering Technological Solutions

This hands-on session requires minimal technical knowledge but is designed to inspire someone to look into this further as to the type of careers they could have in this area, from technician to PhD. By the end of the day– students should know the basics of the technology presented, hear from the leading experts in what is coming in the future, and further develop their ideas for how to turn this into a business and help the community! Students will receive a short lesson on how the supply chain ecosystem works, the problems that the supply chain is causing right now, and try out some of the solutions cutting edge researchers have developed to help solve these problems (autonomous driving, platooning, ecodriving, ecorouting, optimization of electrification).

Cohort 1: Low Cost Sensors- Students will learn to use air quality sensors (in groups of 3-4), and roam the CE-CERT campus to try to find hot spots of pollution, co locate monitors and see their agreements, and identify malfunctioning sensors.

Cohort 2: Sustainable Transportation Solutions - Students will receive a short lesson on how the supply chain ecosystem works, the problems that the supply chain is causing right now, and try out some of the solutions cutting edge researchers have developed to help solve these problems (autonomous driving, platooning, ecodriving, ecorouting, optimization of electrification).

Workshop 3. Sustainable Business Solutions - Presentations and Next Steps

To be hosted by the UCR student success center on campus. Students will be challenged to present viable business startup ideas facing sustainable transportation to a panel of experts, followed by discussion, lunch and certificate ceremony. A wrap up session will cover questions about how to continue the educational pathway in these fields. A campus tour may follow
